This edition conveys some relatively positive news including that daily new cases are down more than two-thirds (68%) since January 12, and the 7-day rolling average for new daily cases has now fallen for 36 straight days.

In addition, this edition assesses case trends by grouping the US into four regions (Midwest, Northeast, South, and West). Both the Midwest and the South have experienced at least two-thirds of their COVID deaths to date since October 1, while in the Northeast 41% of its deaths occurred during this timeframe. Also, more than 66% of all confirmed cases so far have occurred since October 1, compared to 26% prior to June 15 and 8% from June 16 – September 30.

Finally, we provide a weekly update of vaccinations. This week, states administered 9.3 million vaccine doses, which is about 20% lower than last week’s total.

The Menges Group was asked to update an analysis of New York’s Medicaid prescription drug expenditure growth over the past several state fiscal years (SFY). Based on our analysis of year-over-year trends since SFY2014, we anticipate that single-digit annual growth is most likely to occur in the upcoming year. This is also in alignment with CMS nationwide estimates of Medicaid prescription drug expenditure trends.

The health policy cows are back for April’s report, which presents data and opinions regarding the need to pilot-test implementing managed care in the Medicare arena in a similar manner as typically occurs in Medicaid — mandatory enrollment of beneficiaries into a small number of competitively selected MCOs.

5-Slide Series

This edition of our Five Slide Series is Medicare-focused, policy-oriented, and qualitative and opinionated in nature. We report on the achievements the Medicaid program has made in the mandatory enrollment MCO model, and convey our thoughts on testing a similar approach in Medicare.

This edition provides a weekly update of COVID cases, deaths, and vaccinations, including county, state, and national views of vaccinations. As of this week, the U.S. has now given roughly 250 million COVID vaccine doses. 44.5% of the population is now vaccinated with at least one dose and 32% is now fully vaccinated, including 83% of seniors receiving at least one dose and 70% receiving full vaccinations. We provide a week-over-week view of vaccination rates by state, as well as a series of county-level maps that shows the variation in vaccination uptake across the country.
