The May edition outlines a pilot program we encourage Medicare policymakers to adopt. It involves testing Medicaid’s key design features in the Medicare arena, which if successful could evolve into a fundamental transformation of Medicare as has occurred with Medicaid (whose transformation also began with pilot testing of this approach). We will be releasing a full paper on this framework with a couple months.

The March 2018 edition of our 5 Slide Series tracks the national Medicaid market share and pre-rebate cost per prescription progression of curative Hepatitis C drugs from CY2014 through CY2017. The introduction of newer, lower cost-per-unit drugs has resulted in a significant shift in market share within this category of drugs. Additionally, we have quantified the considerable market share differences between MCO-paid and FFS-paid Medicaid prescriptions.

This edition tracks recent COVID deaths in the USA in two ways. The national weekly progression has been tabulated across the past two months, showing a decrease of 6% this past week versus the previous week. However, new daily deaths remain near 1,000. We also show daily COVID deaths by state comparing June, July, and August. In 26 states across these months, the average daily deaths have been highest in August.

This edition of our 5 Slide Series is our 20th special edition focusing on the COVID-19 pandemic. As with all prior editions, we have tabulated several highly current data points. The newest type of analysis involves quantifying differences in COVID death rates per capita by race, showing that through June 7, African Americans have experienced more than twice the COVID-19 per capita death rate as Whites, Latinos, and Asians. We also provide various statistics regarding new confirmed cases and tests, nationally and state-by-state – including state rankings on the degree to which new confirmed cases have emerged in the past week.

The March edition tabulates the progression in Medicaid spending from 2012 – 2016, nationwide and with subtotals for states that did and didn’t adopt Medicaid expansion. One key statistic from this edition is that capitation rose from 25.7% of all Medicaid spending in 2012 to 48.7% in 2016 – the capitated model will likely represent the majority of Medicaid spending from 2017 forward.

The February edition tabulates overall health care expenditures from 2006-2016, and shows the progression of Medicaid, Medicare, and private health spending. A key observation from these tabulations is that health costs haven’t grown all that rapidly across the past decade – annual per capita cost increases have averaged 3.7% for the entire US population, 2.3% in Medicare, 3.2% in Medicaid, and 4.0% in the rest of the population.
