This is the first edition of a new prong of our 5 Slide Series focusing on household gun ownership and its role in suicide and homicide deaths. Some of the key information in the attached slides include:
- the USA experiences far more suicides than homicide deaths – e.g., 87% more suicide deaths (than homicide deaths) occurred during 2021;
- across both suicides and homicides during 2021, 60% were attributable to firearms;
- the average age of our suicide and homicide deaths (47 and 34, respectively) is quite low, creating a rather devastating number of life-years lost per death.
